Performances:
Allu Arjun did an excellent job as Pushpa in the first part of the franchise and he even won a national award for his performance in the film. It is no exaggeration to say he outdid himself with his performance in ‘Pushpa2: The Rule’. The way he made every part of his face perform in the Jathara episode is outstanding. At least in seven to eight sequences in the film, he delivered the best performance including the breakdown sequence during the climax. This is the best performance in his career so far and certainly stands a very good chance of winning a national award yet again.
Fahadh Faasil as Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat is very entertaining. He lit the screens with his timing and made the audience burst into laughs quite a few times. The writing for his character has a few flaws but he compensated for the shortcomings in the writing with his effortless performance. Rashmika Manadanna as Sri Valli is first-rate. Be it romantic sequences or emotional sequences or Dancing in the ‘Pellings’ song, she just lived in the character of Srivalli.
Sreeleela in the ‘Kissik’ song danced well and gave tough competition to Allu Arjun in the dance department but she certainly does not have the oomph factor of Samantha who lit the screens with her screen presence in ‘Oo Antava Oo Oo Antava’ song in the first part. Rao Ramesh as Siddappa delivered a first-rate performance. Ajay got a very sequence during the climax and he made it count. Jagadeesh as Keshava did well but his character has no depth or the surprise factor. Jagapathi Babu, Sunil and Anasuya did well but again, their screen space is very limited.
Technicalities:
Four songs from Devi Sri Prasad are good on screen. ‘Sooseki’ is the best out of all the songs and it has a very good chance to rule the playlist of people across the country for a long time. Both Devi Sri Prasad and Sam CS composed the background score for the film. Their work is a mixed bad. The background score is very good in a few sequences and would have been better in a few sequences. There were sync sound issues in a couple of sequences as well.
The cinematography by Mirosław Kuba Brożek is commendable. His work in the Jathara Episode, the chance sequence and the way he captured the lush green forests are worth a mention. Naveen Nooli’s editing would have been better, especially in the second half. Mythri Movie Makers’ production values are first-rate. They put a lot of money into the film and it can be seen on the screen. VFX is decent. It is neither great nor bad.
Positives:
- Allu Arjun’s Once In A Life Time Performance
- 20-Minute Jathara Episode
- Interval Sequence
- Four Very Good Songs
- Sukumar’s Writing & Direction
- Fahadh Faasil’s Entertaining Performance
- Rashmika’s Outburst Sequence At The End of the Jathara Episode
Negatives:
- No Strong Antagonist Characters
- Editing At Places In The Second Half
- Sound Sync Issues In A Couple of Sequences
Analysis:
‘I can’t stand a chance if Sukumar stops doing intelligent brain-twisting films and steps into making commercial mass masala films’, said S S Rajamouli a few years back. And, he was absolutely spot on. Moving out of his comfort zone, Sukumar first made, Rangasthlam, a cult classic commercial film. And, then came the Pushpa franchise. We did see a glimpse of the mass commercial director in him in ‘Pushpa: The Rise’ and in ‘Pushpa2: The Rule’, we see the best version of commercial mass director in Sukumar. He managed to blend the usual ‘Sukumar Writings’ sensibilities perfectly with goosebumps-inducing commercial elements.
Right from the introduction sequence, he was spot on. The first half of the film is neatly packaged in the usual Sukumar pattern with subtle elevations to the lead character, Pushpa Raj and it ends with a superb interval sequence. There was a dip slight dip in pace for a few minutes in the first half but he ended the first half on a superb note with a very good pre-interval sequence.
It is in the second half, we see a completely different Sukumar. The way the entire ‘Jathara’ episode is written, directed and choreographed and the way Allu Arjun performed in that entire episode is mind-blowing. It is no exaggeration to say the film is worth a watch in the theatres just for this one 20-minute-long episode. The way he blended the ‘Peelings’ & ‘Kissik’ songs into the story narration tells us what a genius he is when it comes to writing the screenplay. Also, the payoff to the ‘Jathara’ episode during the climax episode with the same getup to the hero’s character is another master stroke from the maverick director.
A few may complain about a couple of sequences between the Husband(Pushpa) & Wife(Srivalli) but even in those sequences, the director in Sukumar never went overboard. His writing and meaningful dialogues involving Pushpa and Srivalli, how they both love each other and how they both go to any extent to support the other person is splendid. Ajay’s emotional breakdown sequence during the climax is yet another brilliantly written and executed sequence. His writing and the hard-hitting and thought-provoking dialogues about the importance of the wife in a man’s life & respecting women are top-notch. He is sure to get very good applause from the women.
On the flip side, there is no strong antagonist in the film. Although there are multiple antagonist characters, Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat, Prathap Reddy, Bugga Reddy, Siddappa, Mangalam Srinu & Dakshayani, none of the characters and their counters really challenge Pushparaj. He comes on top every time. Sukumar and the writing team would have focused a bit more on creating tough challenges for the lead character. Editing should have been a bit tighter in the second half.
Overall, Pushpa2: The Rule has a few flaws but the positives outnumbered those flaws. Allu Arjun’s best performance in his career so far coupled with the ‘Mass Commercial’ Sukumar’s writing and direction makes the film thoroughly entertaining and it is certainly worth watching in packed theatres.
Bottomline – Pushpa Gadi Thandavam
Rating – 3.25/5
